Recent Orangeburg County high school graduates are eligible to receive up to $2,000 from the SC Promise Scholarship for tuition, fees and books to attend Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College in 2018-19. The SC Promise Scholarship is NOT based on income or your current residence.

Orangeburg Consolidated School Districts 3, 4 and 5 are among the districts included in the SC Promise Scholarship program funded by the S.C. Legislature for residents of the plaintiff school districts in Abbeville County School District et al vs. South Carolina. Locally, recent graduates in Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell and Clarendon counties and Lexington School District Four are also eligible to receive the scholarship.

Recent Calhoun County high school graduates are eligible to receive up to $2,000 from the Calhoun Pledge Scholarship for tuition, fees and books to attend Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College in 2018-19. The Calhoun Pledge Scholarship is NOT based on income or your current residence.

Calhoun County was not a plaintiff in Abbeville County School District et al vs. South Carolina. As part of our ongoing commitment to our service area, OCtech has created the Calhoun Pledge Scholarship so that all of our students are given the opportunity to receive an affordable education.

Eligibility Requirements

  • You resided in Orangeburg County and graduated from a public or private high school from 2013 to 2018; OR
  • You resided in Orangeburg County and received a GED from 2013 to 2018; OR
  • You resided in Orangeburg County and graduated from a home school from 2013 to 2018.

NOTE: Students who previously received a bachelor’s degree are not eligible.

  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at https://fafsa.ed.gov/. The FAFSA is required for many types of financial aid, such as the Pell Grant and S.C. Lottery Tuition Assistance, which will be applied to your cost of education first.The scholarship will be applied toward the remaining cost of tuition, mandatory fees, program fees and up to $300 for books after other forms of financial aid are applied. Refunds will not be issued.
  • Complete the SC Promise or Calhoun Pledge scholarship application. Apply now. Funds are limited.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What do the SC Promise and Calhoun Pledge scholarships cover?
A: The scholarships covers any courses offered by OCtech that lead to an associate degree, certificate or diploma. Unlike the Calhoun Pledge Scholarship, which is only for students who resided in Calhoun County and graduated from high school between 2013 and 2018, SC Promise Scholarship can be used at any of the 16 S.C. technical colleges. Both scholarships will be applied toward the remaining cost of tuition, mandatory fees, program fees and books after other forms of financial aid such as S.C. Lottery Tuition Assistance and Pell are applied.

Q: Does the scholarship cover the cost of books?
A: Yes. The scholarship includes a $300 allowance for books.

Q: Does the scholarship include online classes?
A: Yes, the scholarships cover any courses offered that lead to a certificate, diploma or associate degree. These courses may be offered online, in-person, hybrid, evening, daytime, etc.

Q: I am eligible based on the graduation requirements, but I do not live in Orangeburg or Calhoun counties now. Can I receive the scholarship?
A: Yes, and no. The SC Promise Scholarship is portable, meaning you may use it at OCtech or at any of the other 15 technical colleges in S.C. It also transfers with you if you transfer from one technical college to another technical college in S.C. Because its funding comes directly from sources at the college, the Calhoun Pledge Scholarship is not portable and can only be used at OCtech.

Q: Am I eligible if I have received a bachelor’s degree?
A: No

Q: Can I enroll in mini session courses with 6 hours and receive the scholarship?
A: Yes, you can apply for scholarship funds during any regular or mini session courses during the fall 2018 and/or spring semesters.

Q: I have already received an associate degree, certificate or diploma. Am I eligible to receive the scholarship for another associate degree, certificate or diploma?
A: Yes

Q: I have already enrolled for the fall semester. Can I receive the scholarship for 2018-19?
A; Yes. You will need to complete the SC Promise or Calhoun Pledge application and meet all eligibility requirements.

Q: I took classes at OCtech a while back. Am I eligible?
A:  As long as you do not have a bachelor’s degree and meet the eligibility requirements, you are eligible. The scholarship cannot be applied to past balances owed to the college.

Q: Is the scholarship only for students who are starting college during the 2018-19 year?
A: No, current students are eligible.

Q: Is the scholarship based on need?
A: No

Q: I received other scholarships and/or financial aid. Am I eligible?
A: The SC Promise and Calhoun Pledge scholarships will be applied after other forms of financial aid such as S.C. Lottery Tuition Assistance and Pell are applied.
