Excel Basics

The prerequisite to this course is CPT 170 or Lotus or Excel experience.  Below is a list of objectives you should be able to perform before you attempt this course.  Please review these objectives carefully.  If you do not remember how to perform any of these objectives in Excel, please review the appropriate part of Excel Tutorials 1, 2 or 3 in your textbook.

After reviewing the objectives, complete the Excel Basics assignment and e-mail it to me.  Everyone must complete this assignment and pass the Pretest before moving on to Tutorial 4 in this course.  After you send the assignment to me, I'll send you the quiz.

Excel Objectives

  1. Identify and use the major components of the Excel window.
  2. Move around in a worksheet using both the mouse and the keyboard.
  3. Open, save and close a worksheet.
  4. Identify and enter text, numbers, formulas and functions.  Enter formulas and functions using the pointing method.
  5. Use AutoSum to total a range.
  6. Correct mistakes in cell entries.
  7. Delete contents of cells.
  8. Use Excel Help.
  9. Copy formulas using the fill handle.
  10. Write formulas using the order of precedence.
  11. Identify and enter formulas using both relative and absolute references.
  12. Use the Average, Max and Min functions.
  13. Spell check the worksheet.
  14. Insert a row or column.
  15. Delete a row or column.
  16. Use Undo and Redo.
  17. Move a range of cells.
  18. Format a worksheet using Autoformat.
  19. Print the worksheet and cell formulas in both portrait and landscape orientations.  Make the printout fit on one page and center the printout on the page.
  20. Enter custom headers and footers.
  21. Format numbers using the comma, currency and percentage formats.
  22. Align cell contents to the left, right or center.
  23. Center text across column.
  24. Change fonts, font style and font size.
  25. Use borders and color for emphasis.
Assignment:
Click here to download the file Cookies.  The file will have three sheets:  Instructions, Example, and Cookie Sales.  First, read the instructions on the Instructions sheet.  Look at the example on the Example sheet, but do all your work on the Cookie Sales sheet.  Follow the instructions on the Instructions sheet to send the file to me after you complete it.
