The Division of Career Training and Development at Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College is pleased to offer the Tractor-Trailer Operator Training course. Successful graduates of this 180-hour program obtain the class "A" Commercial Drivers License.

The course includes classroom instruction and behind the wheel experience to prepare individuals for the Commercial Drivers License (CDL) road test. Approximately two-thirds of training time is spent driving combination tractor-trailer vehicles, which provides participants with rural, urban and interstate driving experience.

Training Includes
  - Defensive Driving
  - Pre-trip inspection requirements
  - Coupling and uncoupling procedures of tractor and trailers
  - Gear shifting diagrams and operational procedures
  - Double clutching
  - Air brake system
  - Department of Transportation safety check
  - Motor carrier safety regulations
  - Filing driver's log
  - Backing exercises
  - Preventative maintenance
  - Open country road driving
  - Traffic driving
  - Freight handling principles
  - CDL driving skills preparation

Entry Requirements
  - Must present a copy of your 10- year driving record
  - Must be 21 years old or older (Driving outside of S.C.)
  - Must be 18 years old or older (Driving in S.C.)
  - Must be in good physical condition and pass the D.O.T. physical
  - Must have a valid driver's license
  - Must have driven in Continental U.S. for a period of at least two years
  - Must speak, read and write the English language fluently
  - Must pass a drug screening

Placement Assistance
Many trucking companies actively recruit OCtech truck driving graduates. We host recruiters for truck driving companies during training sessions. Multitudes of career opportunities are made available to graduates who have good work records, good driving records, and meet the industry requirements. This is your first step toward an exciting career as Commercial Driver.

There is a $400 reservation fee, which is nonrefundable should you decide to withdraw before the course begins.

New Driver: Existing program, use same descripition as above.

Refresher: A course designed for the student who possesses a CDL "A" and has not been driving a Clas "A" vehicle for an extended period of time. Topics include a review of the Pre-Trip Inspection, Basic Skills, and On-the-Road-Driving.

CDL Renewal/Upgrade: A course designed for the student who has a Student Driver Permit and a prior CDL "A" or possesses a CDL "B". Topics include a review of the Pre-Trip Inspection, Basic Skills, On-the-Road-Driving and CDL "A" Testing.

CDL Retest: Use of truck by OCTC student for purpose of retesting.

Students may register by phone with a credit card, or complete the registration form and mail to the address on the registration form, or come by the Continuing Education Office in the Community and Student Life Building on campus.
