Completing Employment Applications

  • PURPOSE OF EMPLOYMENT APPLICATIONS
  • Used as a basis for interviewing or not interviewing candidates.

Used as an indication of an applicant’s education and skills.

Used to determine how well an individual can follow directions.

Used to determine neatness, thoroughness, spelling and writing abilities of applicant.

  • TIPS FOR COMPLETING EMPLOYMENT APPLICATIONS
  • 1. Call the company to inquire about specific times that they may receive applications.

    2. Dress appropriately.

    3. Have all necessary materials with you such as pen, correction fluid, social security card, another form of identification, dictionary, references and resume.

    4. If possible, make copies of the application to practice completing it.

    5. Read the entire form thoroughly before you begin to answer any questions.

    6. Complete all blanks-write "NA" or "Not Applicable" if an item does not apply to you.

    7. Know the title of the position that you are applying for.

    8. Always provide honest, complete and accurate answers.

    9. Be as neat as possible-if you make a mistake, ask for another form or use your correction fluid.

    10. Spell correctly and do not use abbreviations.

    11. Use blue or black ink.

    12. Sign and date the application wherever requested.

    13. Review form completely before returning to employer.

    14. Follow up with the company 7 to 14 days after you have completed the application.

  • HOW TO ANSWER THOSE "SPECIAL QUESTIONS"
  • 1. Work History: Be prepared with all dates, names of supervisors, addresses, telephone numbers, salary history, job titles, duties, and reasons for leaving.

    2. Criminal Record: Does not include minor traffic violations. If you have a record, put "will discuss at interview." ALWAYS TELL THE TRUTH.

    3. References: Ask 3-4 people ahead of time. Use people that know you and will say only positive things about you. Never use a family member. Be prepared with names, titles, addresses and telephone numbers.

    4. Be specific about the job you are applying for and know the title of it.

    5. Salary Desired: It is best to put "Salary negotiable." That way you do not undersell or oversell yourself.
