Medical
laboratory testing plays a crucial role in the detection, diagnosis and
treatment of diseases and the majority of this testing is performed by
medical laboratory technicians! Medical laboratory technicians (MLT’s)
examine and analyze body fluids, tissues and cells. They also look for
bacteria, parasites or other micro-organisms; analyze the chemical content
of fluids; check for abnormal cells, match blood transfusions; and test
drug levels in the blood to show how a patient is responding to treatment. The mission of the Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College Department of Medical Laboratory Technology is to provide a comprehensive education in the field of of clinical laboratory science. We see seek to provide our students with the skills and knowledge necessary to perform laboratory procedures in the highest standard of current practice. Our goal is for our graduates to serve their communities, patients, and employers by providing quality laboratory services which contribute to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions and diseases. Through the use of sophisticated automated laboratory equipment and instruments, MLT’s are able to perform and analyze a number of tests simultaneously, then report the results to physicians. MLT’s need to possess good analytical judgement and the ability to work well under pressure. Close attention to detail is also essential because small differences or changes in test substances or numerical readouts can be crucial to patient care. With the widespread use of automated laboratory equipment, computer skills are very important. Medical laboratory technicians work in varied medical environments, including hospitals, physicians’ offices, research facilities, and private laboratories. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the registry exam given by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, American Medical Technologists or the National Certification Agency for Medical Laboratory Personnel. The curriculum is accredited nationally by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Admission to the MLT program is based on successful completion of required placement tests and proof of high school diploma or G.E.D. The Admissions Office will provide specific program information and additional admission requirements. An admission physical examination validating health status and annual updates are required. Students will be required to have a Criminal Background Check as part of the admissions process. During the fourth and fifth semesters of the program, students are placed in one or more clinical facilities in Orangeburg and the surrounding areas for clinical experience. Students will be required to travel out of town for selected clinical experiences. Assignment of clinical experience is based on availability of space in affiliated clinical facilities. OCtech’s MLT program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences, 8410 West Bryn Mawr Avenue, Suite 670, Chicago, IL 60631-3415.
