Industrial Maintenance Technician (IMT) is the term used to describe the work associated with maintaining the equipment in an industrial facility. Historically the work was organized around areas of specialization i.e. mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, welding, fluid power, carpentry, masonry, etc. or by the work associated with maintaining the equipment versus the buildings/facilities.

In recent years many of the “skill areas” have been blended together to create a hybrid or multi-skilled position known as “Industrial Maintenance Technician.” The IMT of today is expected to be able to perform work on mechanical, electrical, electronic, and fluid power systems. It is not uncommon to for refrigeration and/or HVAC to be considered part of the IMT responsibilities.

The IMT should be proficient in the use of hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments, mechanical and electrical test instruments, welding and cutting. Cognitive skills in mathematics, reasoning, problem-solving, decision making, physical sciences, reading, and teamwork are virtual prerequisites to be being successful in the field.




INDUSTRIAL MAINTENANCE BASIC CERTIFICATE

The Basic Industrial Maintenance Certificate prepares students for employment as entry level industrial maintenance technicians. The curriculum used in this certificate utilizes the National Center for Construction Education and Research modules.
