Gov. Henry McMaster has appointed Ray Sabalis to the Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College Area Commission.
“We are pleased to welcome Ray to the commission and look forward to working with her,” Area Commission Chair Landy Weathers said at the governing body’s March meeting.
Sabalis is a South Carolina native who graduated from the University of South Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in political science. She has been involved in various service capacities with The Episcopal Church for decades. Her work focused on technology and development. She retired as director of development at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Va.
“Two of our three children graduated from college in a shorter period than they would otherwise have been able to as a result of their enrollment at the local technical college in courses that provided transferable academic credits,” Sabalis said. “In addition, as an elected member of Orangeburg County Council and my family’s ongoing involvement with the OCtech Foundation, I learned more about OCtech and its value to our two counties. I look forward to collaborating with the other Area Commission members to promote the well-being of OCtech and support its continuing efforts in fulfilling its educational and training missions.”
“Mrs. Sabalis brings an exceptional blend of experience in higher education, a deep understanding of local governance and unwavering dedication to our community,” OCtech President Dr. Walt Tobin said. “We are honored to welcome her to the OCtech Area Commission and look forward to her invaluable contributions as we continue to advance educational excellence and workforce development in Orangeburg and Calhoun counties.”
